Vantrix Launches "Play, Pause and Resume" Across Multiple Screens at Videotron

Feature allows consumers access to video anywhere, anytime and on any screen

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona, Spain – February 16, 2011Vantrix, the global leader in mobile video optimization and delivery solutions, today announced its Multi-screen Video solution now offers the ability of Play, Pause and Resume (PPR) video to multiple screens at Videotron.

Thanks to Vantrix wireless expertise, PPR feature enables consumers to start to watch a Video on Demand (VOD) on one device, such as a TV, PC or mobile phone, and then continue watching the same program on another device from where they left off. For example, with PPR consumers can start to watch their favorite movie on their TV at home, continue viewing on their mobile phone on the commuter train to work and then, at a later time finish on their PC at work.

“Play, pause and resume is a great example of the video experience today’s multi-connected consumers are demanding from their service providers,” said Patrick Lopez, CMO for Vantrix. “Anytime, anywhere content is the industry standard and with multiple screens PPR, we can ensure mobile operators have the technology it takes to deliver a seamless viewing experience to their subscribers, regardless of device or location. We believe PPR is today unique in the market.”

“Already available on our television service, illico TV, Vantrix’s Play, Pause and Resume functionality on the web and mobile completed our unique anytime, anywhere and on any device customer experience,” said Manon Brouillette, Executive Vice President, Strategy & Market Development. “This is a critical part of our ‘TV everywhere’ strategy and could not have been achieved without Vantrix’s wireless industry and technology expertise.”

Play, Pause and Resume is the latest addition to Vantrix’ comprehensive Multi-screen Video solution that allows operators to offer flexible and reliable viewing experiences to mobile subscribers. The key benefits of Vantrix Multi-screen Video include:

  • Multiple Screen Management

Wireless carriers can offer their subscribers services available across multiple screens, providing a seamless experience. More importantly, a client who is subscribed to a specific cable channel will have access to the same channel, when available on the Web and Mobile. This feature allows mobile operators to offer different channel line-up per customer, just like on their cable offering, segmenting the customer base and providing opportunities for premium channel and content packages.

  • Dynamic Bitrate Adaptation (DBRA)

This unique and patented mechanism enables consumers to have the best end user video experience such as smooth/jitter-free video and no buffering. It also enables the operator to provide better quality of service – thereby increasing service stickiness, usage and user loyalty.

  • Flexible Business Models

The platform allows operators to offer services that satisfy many different business models including Free-to-use, Pay-on Demand, duration based charging, subscription based, subsidized content and advertising.

Vantrix Takes a Quantum Leap in Video Optimization

Company brings crucial innovations - Visual Quality Metrics, Internet Content Adaptation Protocol and Dynamic Bitrate Adaptation – to help solve the bandwidth crunch

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona, Spain – February 15, 2011Vantrix, the global leader of mobile video optimization and delivery solutions, announced today the launch of three new innovations - Visual Quality Metrics, Internet Content Adaptation Protocol and Dynamic Bit Rate Adaptation – enabling network operators to effectively manage capacity and to better manage video traffic growth in a cost-effective manner.

“Vantrix is the market leader in video optimization. These technology innovations further underscore our dedication to providing network operators with best-in-class technology to deal with network congestion and user experience,” said Jean Mayrand, CTO and co-founder of Vantrix. “Operators want intelligent solutions to their increasing network congestion issues and Vantrix has the most innovative and efficient solutions.”

About Visual Quality Metrics

When it comes to video, the existing industry metrics (PSNR, SSIM) are somewhat inefficient in representing human perception of video quality. Video Quality Metric algorithms predict visual quality by comparing a distorted signal against a reference. The main objective of the metrics is to evaluate the impact of the optimization process; the solution compares frame by frame the normalized video (rescaled if required) with the optimized version. Vantrix’ research arm, Vantrix Chair of Applied Research in Multimedia Optimization, in collaboration with Montreal’s Ecole de Technologie Superieure, has invented a set of metrics to approximate the human eye perception.

About Dynamic Bitrate Adaptation

Vantrix Dynamic Bitrate Adaptation (DBRA) is a unique, patented adaptive bitrate technology developed by Vantrix. This feature provides unparalleled video streaming quality across all network conditions. The video bitrate is modified “on-the-fly” on every individual video session by opening, decoding and re-encoding each stream to the actual frame rate/bitrate most adapted to the network conditions for that particular point in time.

During a streaming session, Vantrix DBRA monitors network bandwidth metrics and uses this information to dynamically adapt the stream bit rate, thus maintaining an optimal end-user experience throughout the session.

“In December 2010, Vantrix was granted a United States Patent on our unique DBRA technology, which highlights our innovation and our leadership in this market,” concluded Mayrand.

About iCAP

Rather than a traditional approach where the optimization system sits in the direct path of all data traffic, potentially adding latency, points of failure, complexity and an increase in footprint, ICAP allows Vantrix Bandwidth Optimizer to be invoked only for traffic that requires optimization.

About Vantrix

Vantrix, the global leader of mobile video optimization and delivery solutions, improves mobile and converged video economics for its customers by ensuring that content is delivered cost effectively, and with the best possible user experience, regardless of the service, device or network.
